Keep chkdsk Scan From Running At Boot By Fixing Registry
Hey everyone and welcome to my first ever tutorial on how to fix a problem with Windows that is caused due to a problem in the registry! I'm sure you all have seen it at one time or another, you turn on your computer and before it can finish booting it starts a chkdsk scan. Once it finishes it reboots and then starts another chkdsk scan. It then continues to do this over and over again in a never ending loop. The only way to stop it is to press a key before the scan begins.
Well guess what? There is a way to make your computer quit running the scan on every boot. Want to know how? Then let's get started..
WARNING: BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FOLLOW ANY OF THE STEPS OUTLINED IN THIS TUTORIAL!
The reason Windows runs the chkdsk scan every time it boots is because there is a registry key that has been altered. In this tutorial we will create a registry file that allows us to reset this registry key back to it's default value.
To start let's go to our desktop. Next, right click and choose New and then choose Text Document. An example can be shown in the image below.
Let's name the file FixChkdsk and then let's change the extension from .txt to .reg Once you have done the icon will change to a piece of paper and what looks like a cube being broken apart.
Now we will right click on our new .reg file and click edit. It should open the file in Notepad. Next, copy and paste the code below into Notepad and then save the file.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
"BootExecute"="autocheck autochk *"
Basically the 1st line in the code tells Windows that it will use edit the registry using the default method. The 2nd line of code tells Windows what registry key to look for and the 3rd line tells Windows what to make the value of the registry key.
Once the file is saved you can close Notepad. Now double click your new FixChkdsk.reg file and just keep pressing yes. It will then tell you that you have successfully changed the registry.
Congratulations, you just created your first registry file and fixed your computer from running the chkdsk scan every time it boots.
